Mahashivratri 2027 at Kashi Vishwanath: when to go, how long the queue runs, and getting a family there

Devotees carrying brass lotas of water walk in line down a narrow Varanasi lane strung with marigolds before dawn

Next year's Mahashivratri lands on Saturday, 6 March. The big worship at Kashi Vishwanath goes on all night, and the Nishita Kaal, the hour that matters most, starts a little after twelve, so technically on the 7th. Panchangs differ by a few minutes on this, so look at a Varanasi panchang or the trust's own notice in the week before.

What actually happens on the night

On Mahashivratri there's no shutting the doors for the night like on other days. The priests do four prahar pujas through the dark hours instead, and people keep getting darshan in between, with a short halt each time one puja hands over to the next. Earlier, in the evening, the Shiv Baraat winds through the old city. That's Shiva's wedding procession, and it's noisy, happy and packed.

Open all night doesn't mean walk straight in, sadly. People are let through in batches along barricaded corridors, and around midnight the wait is at its worst. Families sometimes tell us they expected an empty temple at three in the morning. It isn't empty at any hour on this night.

Can you book Sugam darshan for Mahashivratri?

Usually not. On its heaviest days the trust stops selling Sugam slots and everyone joins the one queue. It did exactly that on the Shravan Mondays in 2026, and Mahashivratri is bigger than any of those. If you see someone selling a guaranteed Mahashivratri slot, please be careful; the only real seller is shrikashivishwanath.org.

How we'd plan it with elders

Nobody drives up to the temple gate that day. On a normal day cars stop near Godowlia, but on Mahashivratri the police often push that point further back, so what you really need to know is how far your parents can walk, and at what hour.

With older family members we'd suggest one of two plans. The first is darshan the evening before, on 5 March, when the crowd is building but still manageable, then watching the Shiv Baraat on the night from a safe spot instead of queuing. The second is to wait until the morning after, once the night's crowd has thinned, and go then.

You'll sit in the vehicle a lot longer than usual, so it matters more. Families with grandparents pick the Urbania for this night because of its low step and seats that recline. Our driver parks at the nearest spot the police will let him, which means no one is trudging back to a distant car park at 2 AM.

Coming the evening before and again the next morning? Two 8-hour bookings usually beat one very long day. Send us your plan and we'll work out which costs you less.

Small things that help on the night

As on any day, phones, bags and leather can't go in, and on this night the locker line is huge, so leave whatever you can in your room. Pack a shawl, because riverside nights in early March still get chilly. Have a proper meal first. And fix one meeting spot with the family before you join the line, since you'll lose each other in that crowd at least once.

Common questions

When is Mahashivratri 2027?
Saturday, 6 March 2027. The Nishita Kaal, the most important hour, falls just after midnight, so in the early minutes of 7 March.
Is Kashi Vishwanath open all night on Mahashivratri?
Yes, darshan continues through the night around the four prahar pujas. But it's batch entry through barricades, and the wait is longest around midnight.
Can I book VIP or Sugam darshan on Mahashivratri?
Normally no. The trust stops selling Sugam slots on its busiest days. Anyone promising a guaranteed slot that night isn't selling a real one.
How close can a car get to Kashi Vishwanath on Mahashivratri?
Usually Godowlia, and sometimes further out, depending on that day's police plan. From there you walk. That's why we plan the timing around how much walking your elders can manage.
