Dev Deepawali in Varanasi

On Kartik Purnima the whole ghat front is lit with clay lamps. It is the busiest night of the Varanasi year, and the one where planning the vehicle badly costs you the evening.

What actually happens

At dusk, lamps are lit in rows down every ghat from Assi to Rajghat. The main Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh runs at a far larger scale than usual, and there is a laser and fireworks sequence over the river later in the evening. The lit ghats hold for two to three hours.

The thing nobody tells you

The ghat approaches close to vehicles from the afternoon and are barricaded. Whatever any operator promises, no van is dropping you at Dashashwamedh that night. Realistic drop points sit well back from the river, and you walk twenty to forty minutes depending on which ghat you want. Plan the walk into the evening rather than discovering it at a barricade.

Boat, or the steps

From the water you see the full sweep of lit ghats at once, which is the image that brings people. From the steps you get the atmosphere and the aarti but only your immediate stretch. Both are legitimate; the boat is the one that sells out. Boats are booked separately from the vehicle and climb steeply in price as the date closes.

How we run the evening

We position the van at a drop point chosen for the ghat you are actually heading to, hold it there for the duration, and pick you up at an agreed point away from the crush once the crowd thins. The driver stays contactable the whole time. On a 12-hour day that is ₹5,999 for the 17-seater or ₹7,499 for the 9-seat Maharaja.

Book by early October

Six to eight weeks ahead for the van, thirty to forty-five days for any temple slot that week. After that it is a question of what is left rather than what you want.

Dev Deepawali questions

When is Dev Deepawali 2026?
Tuesday 24 November 2026, on Kartik Purnima. The lamps are lit at dusk, roughly between 17:15 and 18:00, and the ghats stay lit for two to three hours.
How early should I book a vehicle for Dev Deepawali?
Six to eight weeks. There are few Force Urbania vans in Varanasi and they commit early for this date. Hotels on the ghat side go even earlier.
Can a vehicle drop me at the ghats on Dev Deepawali night?
No. The entire ghat approach is closed to vehicles and heavily barricaded from the afternoon. Realistic drop points are well back from the river and you walk the last 20 to 40 minutes depending on which ghat you are heading for.
Is a boat worth it for Dev Deepawali?
It is the only way to see the full sweep of lit ghats at once, which is the thing people come for. Boats are booked separately and prices rise steeply as the date approaches. Book the boat and the vehicle at the same time, not sequentially.
