Varanasi to Ayodhya is 220 km on NH-31 and NH-330, through Jaunpur and Sultanpur. Four to five hours each way in ordinary conditions. Almost every problem with this trip traces back to one decision: what time you leave.
Why 06:00 and not 09:00
Leaving at 06:00 puts you in Ayodhya around 10:30 with a full day: Ram Janmabhoomi through the middle of the day, Hanuman Garhi and Kanak Bhawan in the afternoon, and back in Varanasi by 20:00. Leaving at 09:00 puts you there at 13:30, and after the darshan queue there is no afternoon left.
The three hours you save by not leaving early are the same three hours that make the trip worth taking. This is the single highest-leverage decision on the whole itinerary.

The road itself
Mostly good, with patched sections through and after Jaunpur that are the reason this route is the clearest case for air suspension on our fleet. Four to five hours in a leaf-sprung vehicle over that surface is felt by the second hour; in a monocoque body with air suspension it largely is not.

When to stay the night instead

With elders in the group, or if you want the Saryu aarti at dusk rather than a dash back, a night in Ayodhya turns an endurance test into a trip — and costs roughly the same in vehicle hours because the billed kilometres barely change.
