Taking elderly parents to Varanasi

· 8 min read

The cream leather lounge interior of a Maharaja Urbania with full-recline seating

We get this call often: parents in their seventies or eighties, a lifetime's wish to see Kashi, and an adult child trying to work out how to make it comfortable. The instinct is to spend on the vehicle. That is worth doing, and it solves less of the problem than people expect.

What a vehicle genuinely fixes

  • The step height. An Urbania's low floor step is the single most useful feature on a temple day, because the vehicle is boarded fifteen or more times.
  • Road surface. Air suspension against leaf springs is the difference between arriving from Ayodhya rested and arriving sore.
  • Waiting. The van holds at the drop point rather than being re-booked, so nobody is standing in the sun looking for it.
  • Temperature. Individual AC vents matter more than seat width in May and June.

What no vehicle fixes

Kashi Vishwanath is a ten-minute walk from Godowlia through a narrow, uneven, crowded lane. That is true for a Swift Dzire and true for the most expensive vehicle in Varanasi, because it is a municipal restriction on the old city rather than an operator limitation. Anyone implying their vehicle gets closer is selling you something that does not exist.

The ghats are stone steps, often wet, frequently unlit at the edges. Dashashwamedh is eight to ten minutes down from Godowlia and the same back up afterwards, in an evening crowd.

If walking is the binding constraint, the highest-value thing you can buy is not a better vehicle. It is a Sugam Darshan slot, booked on the temple trust's own portal, which turns a three-to-six hour standing queue into about an hour.

The stops that need almost no walking

StopWalkTime to allow
Tulsi Manas MandirNone — direct parking30 minutes
Durga Kund2 minutes30 minutes
Sankat Mochan2 minutes30–45 minutes
SarnathFlat walking inside the siteHalf a day
Kaal Bhairav5 minutes30–45 minutes

A genuinely comfortable Varanasi day can be built entirely from that list, plus a boat. Whether Kashi Vishwanath itself is attempted is a decision worth making deliberately, in advance, rather than at the mouth of the gali.

The boat is easier than the steps

For the evening aarti, a boat means boarding once from a single point rather than descending and re-climbing ghat steps in a crowd after dark. For the sunrise trip it means ninety seated minutes with the best view in the city. Of everything on a Varanasi itinerary, the boat has the best comfort-to-experience ratio for an older traveller.

Pacing that works

  • Two stops in the morning, two in the late afternoon, and a genuine rest between 12:00 and 15:00. The midday heat is not worth pushing through at any age and especially not at eighty.
  • Three days rather than two. The compressed version works for a family of thirty-year-olds and not for anyone else.
  • One temple per outing rather than a chain of them, so the walking is spread across days.
  • October to March. May and June regularly reach 45°C and the stone holds it.

What we will tell you honestly

The Urbania's low step and air suspension make a real difference, and we would book one for our own parents. But if the question is whether your mother can manage the gali walk to Vishwanath, the answer depends on her and not on us — and we would rather say that plainly than take a booking on a promise the city will not keep.

Common questions

Is Varanasi suitable for elderly travellers?
Much of it is. Sankat Mochan, Durga Kund, Tulsi Manas and Sarnath need almost no walking and have direct parking. Kashi Vishwanath and the ghats involve unavoidable walks on uneven ground, which is the part to plan around honestly.
How far do you walk at Kashi Vishwanath?
About ten minutes each way from Godowlia crossing, through a narrow and crowded lane. No vehicle of any size gets closer — it is a municipal restriction on the old city and applies to every operator.
Which vehicle is most comfortable for elderly parents in Varanasi?
A Force Urbania, chosen for its low floor step and air suspension rather than seat width. The 9-seat Maharaja adds full-recline seating for long outstation legs to Ayodhya or Bodhgaya.
Should elderly visitors take a boat or watch the aarti from the steps?
The boat, almost always. It means boarding once from a single point rather than descending and re-climbing ghat steps in an evening crowd, and the frontal view is better.
